Ten Steps to Combat Stress in April

April is Stress awareness month and with dealing with the pandemic and now the aftermath and trying to get back to normal, stress is very real for so many at the moment. I hope I can give you some pointers to combat stress today.

I recently did a stress test on Stress.org and it came back that I have high stress in my life. It didn’t really come as a surprise. As a disabled mum of five, three of them have disabilities too, it can be extremely stressful for me.

Combat Stress

There are some simple things you can do to combat stress. I don’t have all the answers, but here are few ideas that may help. Remember, if things do get real bad for you, there is always help available

  1. Try to be more positive
  2. Eat healthier
  3. Get a good nights sleep
  4. Exercise More
  5. Use your technology items less
  6. Get to grips with time management
  7. Drink More
  8. Say No
  9. Practice Deep Breathing
  10. Prioritise your health

I’m not saying it’s easy. Even looking at that list causes me stress. I hate shopping and trying to eat healthy, but I do feel so much better after a healthy meal. It’s hard for me to exercise being disabled, but it’s not so hard to look after myself a little better.

Did you know that if you feel thirsty then you are already dehydrated. Hydration makes your body work so much better. Because of the treatment I have I need to drink a lot of water every day or I end up with terrible headaches. You can always ‘spruce’ up your water by drinking squash or cold tea, a favourite of mine.

Sleep is a problem for a lot of people, but if you try some of the other stress busting ideas, like an improved diet and less tech. Then sleep problems can improve.

The list is not extensive but a lot of the ideas work together, master one or two and the others can be easier. Even exercise, being disabled I find it really difficult, but I do try to move regularly. I definitely feel worse if I stay put for too long. It doesn’t matter how much you do, you just need to do what you can.

Mindfulness

I’m a big believer in mindfulness and wrote a post about it. To practice mindfulness you just need to be in the here and now and stop focusing on the past or the future. How to Manage Seasonal Allergies

Spring and summer are the highlights of many people’s year. Feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin and seeing the vibrant colours of newly blossoming flowers is guaranteed to lighten your mood and make you feel better. As well as being a favourite time of year for many people, the warmer seasons can have a downside, which is allergies. Seasonal allergies affect many people every year and can disrupt their enjoyment of spring and summer.

Allergic rhinitis, aka hay fever, is a seasonal allergy that is especially common in the UK. Research suggests that between 10% and 30% of adults suffer from hay fever, and the condition affects up to 40% of children. Many people rely on antihistamines to relieve their allergy symptoms, but there are some other ways that you can help to reduce the chances of hay fever ruining your spring and summer. Here we will look at some practical ways to reduce the severity of this often frustrating condition.

Create a Barrier

Unfortunately, pollen and other allergens are everywhere. It is not possible to avoid contact with all allergens completely, so the next best solution is to minimise your contact with them. There are a few ways that you can help reduce the likelihood of allergens causing you issues. Firstly, you can create a barrier by wearing sunglasses when you are outside, as this will prevent your eyes from being exposed to allergens. Some people find it helpful to dab some petroleum jelly or buy a specific hay fever pollen balm that helps to trap pollen before it is inhaled through your nostrils.

As well as protecting your eyes and nose from pollen, you may also want to try and prevent pollen from entering your home. Take Care of Your Skin

People that suffer from hay fever often experience other allergy-related conditions, such as eczema. In the West, we tend to compartmentalise our oral health, segmenting it from the rest of the body. But that approach is almost entirely artificial. There’s no real reason for doing it. Any child can tell you that the mouth is a part of the body.

What’s interesting, though, is how what happens in your mouth affects the rest of your health. A toothache isn’t just something that affects your teeth and gums, but also your organs, mind and even heart. 

In this post, we explore some of the specific ways your oral health impacts your entire body. Check them out below. 

Diabetic Complications

You wouldn’t think that oral health would have an effect on diabetes, right? Well, it turns out that it does. Oral inflammation causes body-wide inflammation which, in turn, makes it more difficult to shuttle sugar into cells. Self-Care is So Important During the Pandemic

You have to make sure you take steps to help you look after yourself during this global pandemic. There are a lot of things that play a part in this, and you have got to make sure you focus on doing your best to take things to the next level. There are so many options and tips you can use when it comes to improving self-care and looking after your health and well-being. 

The more you can do to take care of yourself, the better lockdown will be for you, and the healthier and happier you’ll feel. Self-Care During a Pandemic

The importance of Self-care during a pandemic.

You know when you’re on a plane and the flight attendant is going through the safety video with you? There is always mention of fixing your own mask, before helping others. This is important in a stressful situation or extreme turbulence on a plane, as well as in other areas of our life when we hit different kinds of turbulence. We need to look after ourselves first.

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we have all hit a different kind of turbulence. As a result, we need to make sure that we are all taking care of ourselves first, making sure that our minds and bodies are healthy and happy. No matter what your current situation is, whether you’re a healthcare worker on the front like, an essential worker, working from home, or homeschooling children, it is all such a stressful time that none of us are used to. It can feel like too much to cope with sometimes. 

So to avoid slipping into bad habits and relying on unhealthy things to help us cope, we need to focus on the positive and healthy changes that we can make. Food is fuel

We all like to have treats, but they should be just that, only used occasionally as a treat. Constantly having junk food will not be good for our bodies and can make you feel low, sluggish, unwell, and lacking in energy. During a pandemic, especially if you’re at home all of the time, you need to think of choosing foods that will fuel your body and mind. Look for unprocessed foods, foods that are low in sugar, and foods that will help to give you a good balance of energy.

Sleep is a priority for Self-Care

This can be one of the most stressful times that you have ever dealt with. You might have lost a job and have money worries. You might have concerns about the health of your children and worrying about their gaps in education. You might be a frontline worker who just feels stressed with all that you have to do. So whatever you are feeling, you will need to get the rest that you need. Make sure that you create a comfortable sleep environment for yourself and prioritise sleep as much as you can.

Find ways to ease stress

If you can find some ways to ease stress that work for you, then it will really help you through this time. It might be meeting a friend for a socially-distanced walk. You might talk on the phone or FaceTime. You might find exercise helps you the best or cooking yourself a new recipe. Reading a book, taking a bath, or listening to a podcast are all ideas that could help. Find something that works for you and then do it as often as you can.

How Anyone Can Have More Energy

If you’re going to be at your brilliant best when you go out into the world, then you need to have energy. There’s just how it is! Without it, you’ll find that everything is an uphill battle. And if you have a job and a house and kids to look after, then you’ll already be facing an uphill battle. By working to give your energy a nudge in the right direction, you’ll find that you’re able to handle all that life throws at you much more easily. In this blog, we’ll take a look at some of the key ways to improve your energy levels.

Get Exercising

It sounds counterproductive to say that to have more energy, you first must expel some energy, but that’s how it works. For reasons that we won’t go into here, exercising is one of the best methods for giving yourself more energy. If you ever wake up a little tired, then one of the best ways to make yourself feel more alert is to put on some running shoes and go for a jog. You’ll find that when you’re back, you’ll be a lot more energized, and especially so if you top off the run with a cold shower.

Rest Well

You’ll find that unless you’re consistently getting a full night of sleep, then you’re always battling with your energy levels. It’s just a lot more difficult to muster up the energy to do anything when we haven’t slept well. Luckily, sleep is one of those things that can easily be improved. It doesn’t feel like one of those things, but it is. It’s all about knowing what will help you to sleep well. If you’re avoiding screen time, taking CBD gummies or drinking a relaxing tea, and meditating before you hit the hay, then you’ll be much more likely to have a full night of sleep. Don’t accept that you’re destined to always sleep poorly — it’s just not true!

What’s Holding It Back?

As well as doing things to push your energy forward, it’s often a good idea to cut out the things that could be holding it back. For example, are you working too many hours? Are you drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes? Our lifestyles will have a huge impact on how much energy we have. If you can see where your energy might be going, then you’ll be able to wrestle back some control.

Researchers have found that there’s a strong link between our stress and happiness levels and how much energy we have. It could be that the weight of the stress takes up all our energy. Whatever it is, it’s something that’s worth looking at. When we’re in the middle of stress, it can often feel like we just have to accept it, but that’s not true. There are many proven ways to reduce stress, including meditating, exercising, yoga, and talking with friends. If you’re constantly feeling tired, then focus on improving your happiness. It will make a difference.

Why Cooking Is Your Secret Relaxation Weapon

So much of what we do in life is all about mindset. For some people, jumping out of an aeroplane is fun – for others, it’s a nightmare. The same variations in attitude occur concerning cooking. For many people, getting out all the crockery to make a meal from scratch is a massive chore, especially after a long day at the office. For others, it’s a sacred ritual – something you feel like you have to do for the day to feel complete.

It’s a shame that cooking is seen as “just something you have to do,” like brushing your teeth. Because, in truth, it’s not like that at all. Rustling up a delicious meal is more like creating a work of art than sweeping the floor. You get a rare opportunity to do something original that other people can enjoy immediately. That’s a good thing, right? 

Cooking is, in many ways, your secret weapon for more relaxing evenings. There are all sorts of reasons for this – many of which you wouldn’t expect. What’s more, they can all have massive ramifications for your overall well being, changing how you feel daily. 

Cooking Brings The Family Together

Do you sometimes feel disconnected from the other people in your household? If so, it could be because you’re not spending enough time eating together. 

Research shows that families that take the time to eat meals together are typically a lot happier with their setup than those who don’t. There’s something about combining good conversation and delicious food that allows people to connect and enjoy each others’ company. It seems like such a simple thing, but it works. Plus, people will be more willing to put down what they’re doing if they know that something special awaits them at the dinner table. 

Cooking Provides Important Structure To Your Day

From the moment we wake up to the moment we have our evening meal, we’re in a high state of alert, constantly checking our emails and tapping away at our computers. But then when we eat dinner, we cross a threshold. Afterward, we relax, switch off our devices, and take some much-needed time out. 

However, when we just grab meals or quick snacks out of the refrigerator, we undermine this ritual. We’re not making a conscious decision to stop what we’re doing and relax. And that’s a problem. If your parasympathetic nervous system is continually active, it can’t recover from one day to the next. And that means that you ultimately wind up with burnout and chronic fatigue – not what you want. 

Cooking is something that provides structure to your day. Once you get the chopping board out and start arranging ingredients on your sideboard, you know that it’s “me time.” Everything after that point is about unwinding and preparing yourself for bed so that you can do it all again tomorrow.

Cooking Allows You To Eat Foods That Reduce Brain Inflammation

Brain inflammation sounds scary – and it can be. But it is also something that affects the vast majority of people. The reason has to do with the standard western diet.

The majority of the food that people eat at restaurants, take-outs, or pre-prepared contain factors that cause the body’s immune system to go into overdrive. Various toxins, chemicals, additives, and bacteria in the food all trick the body’s defenses into believing that they need to mount a response. Consequently, immune cells start churning out inflammatory factors that make their way to the brain. When this happens, it becomes inflamed, leading to problems like low mood, anxiety, fatigue, brain fog, and depression. 

When you cook, though, you invariably avoid artificial and highly processed products. Most of the time, recipes call for fresh fruits and veggies as they come out of the ground. No middlemen are spiking them with ingredients that will cause inflammation or take away fiber and nutrients that protect your body. 

Did you know that when you put people on a whole food diet, the inflammation level in their brains goes down? Invariably, they report feeling better and more relaxed. Over the course of a month or so, it can make a massive difference. 

Cooking Allows You To Include Pro-Relaxation Ingredients

Dietary styles, such as eating unprocessed foods, can help to combat exhaustion and stress. But some superstar ingredients can do the same thing. 

Take saffron, for instance. This simple herb is famous all over the world for its fragrant smell and yellow color. It’s a beautiful thing to include in your cooking, no matter what you’re making. But it is also extremely relaxing. The same goes for the spice cumin. It acts as a painkiller, calming the center of the brain responsible for anxiety and pain. 

Then there’s CBD oil – something that people are increasingly including when cooking baked goods. It attaches to particular receptors in the nervous system, creating a calming effect and bringing the body back into balance. You can add the stuff to things like brownies or cupcakes (made with healthy ingredients, of course). 

Not many people have heard of the Indian ayurvedic spice, ashwagandha, but there is robust evidence that it also helps people relax. Like some of the other herbs we’ve discussed, it contains chemicals that attach to receptors in the nervous system, shutting down pain and anxiety and balancing your mood. Again, people swear by it. 

Ashwagandha is a bit of a weird ingredient, but you can order it online. It smells a bit like “sweaty horse,” and has a kind of musty aroma. But you can add it to cereal, soups, and baked goods. 

Just be warned – it’s funky stuff!

Cooking Takes Your Mind Off Your Worries

We live in a troubled world. There are so many problems, both in our personal lives and society at large. Thus, sometimes you need a way to switch off and escape your thoughts. For many people, that means sitting down in front of the TV and watching your favorite shows. But for others, it means losing yourself in a recipe and mastering it. 

Cooking is great because it requires you to concentrate on it wholeheartedly. You can’t follow a recipe and think about emails from your boss at the same time. There are so many components involved in making a decent meal; you need to apply yourself fully. 

In that sense, it’s a bit like work. While you’re doing it, you do not have to deal with your own thoughts. You have a distraction. 

Cooking Allows You To Try Novel Flavors

We already talked about some strange flavors, but the range of ingredients and cuisines out there is truly remarkable. The amount of different sensations you can have dancing on your tongue is spectacular, from the tartness of freshly-chopped pineapple to the strange tingling sensation you get eating Sichuan peppercorns.

The Basics

First of all, you need to make sure that you are focusing on the essential things that you know you can’t do without. But it can be surprisingly hard to make these things a reality, and that’s why it is vital that you focus on them as well as possible at all times. If you notice that you are not quite eating right, you will need to delve into what it is that you should be eating more or less of, for instance.

That alone can be a struggle, but mostly it’s about eating plenty of fruit and vegetables and not much else. If you are following that basic diet, you are going to find that you have more energy, you feel better within yourself, and that you are keeping all those problems at bay much more successfully. The other main aspect to diet is to ensure that you are not overeating at all. This is easy to do, but if you think about making use of fasting as a tool then you should find that it is much simpler to make this a reality.

On the exercise front, you don’t actually need all that much in order to be healthy in a normal way. As long as you are getting forty minutes or so of light to moderate exercise every few days, you are probably getting enough. You might want to increase this over time if you are keen on losing weight or you have a specific goal in mind, but for the average person this should be plenty of exercise. It is also a good idea to shake up the kind of exercise you are doing: there is a reason that those who cross-train tend to be so well overall, after all. But the main point is that you should be exercising a minimum amount to keep your heart health in check. If you are doing that, you should be fine.

Many people spend a lot of time at the gym and ensure that they are healthy at work, only to forget about this when they go home. But the home is the most important place in the world if you are trying to live a healthier life, and you need to make sure that yours is set up to be as salubrious for you as possible. But what does this entail and how do you make sure that you are doing everything to keep your home as healthy as possible?

Mostly, this is a matter of setting it up so that it is working for you, in whatever way that might mean. For some people, that will include setting up a home gym, and for others it’s just about having healthy food in the kitchen and no junk food. But one of the most important things is that you are keeping the home as clean as possible. Without a clean home, you can’t hope for your health to really be looked after, and that could be a huge problem in the long run. So make sure that you are cleaning it regularly and thoroughly if you want to really look after your own health.

As long as you are keeping your home in the right condition, your health is going to be in the right condition too. It will be a way to show yourself that you are really taking it seriously, and that alone can be all that you need to do to prove it to yourself.

Regular Check-Ups

You should always make sure that you are getting regular check-ups, as this is a prime way of ensuring that you know what is going on in your body and what problems there might be that need dealing with. Some of these check-ups are particularly important, such as having an annual general health check-up with your GP. That will ensure that there is nothing specifically wrong which you need to worry about, and having that sense of ease is going to be something you enjoy.

Beyond that, there are specific check-ups you should do regularly, once a year or every other year. That includes going to the optometrist to have your eyes checked, as you never know when you might need to start searching a list for eyeglasses. You should also have your ears checked regularly to make sure that you are able to hear well. These things are just as important as any other part of your bodily health, so make sure not to overlook them.

Mental Health

If you are not looking after your mind, then you are not really taking care of your health on the whole, or your body – as these two are often inextricably linked. To look after your mind, you need to focus on not allowing stress to overtake you and keeping an eye on what is going on in your mind, using mindfulness or meditation as a tool. The more you do that, the more aware you are of what you might need to focus on, and that is something that is really going to make a huge difference in the long run.
