A Place to Read

Books That Feel Like October Reads

A little different to my usual book posts. Every year in October I take part in a blogging challenge, Blogtober. Today’s prompt is books that feel like October so I’ve been having a think and tried to come up with some books that make me think of October without actually being horror books. I’ve chosen a few that are spooky, but I’ve also gone for books that are good to cosy up with on chilly nights. (or in my case, in bed while I do my infusions!) I’ve gone for a mixture of weird and wonderful, which I think sums up October. I’ve also included affiliate links for some which if you click and buy it will cost you no extra but may earn me a little money, thank you. The other links are my reviews on this blog.

The Night Circus by Eric Morganstern – I’ve not actually read this yet but it’s on my TBR pile and I think I might choose it next as it would be perfect for October. I have read The Starless Sea (my review) by the same author and it was really different. I think Morganstern is an author that likes to make you think.

The Night Circus is described as enchanting and affecting despite it’s darkness!

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.

I loved the first book and although I bought the rest I’ll admit I never really got to reading them. I did watch the entire series on television though and I think it’s much better visually. It’s scary at times but full of magic and vampires and demons and all things you would associate with the spookier side of October and Halloween.

The Night Ship by Jess Kidd

Jess Kidd is actually one of my favourite authors and I would honestly cuddle up on a cold evening with any of her strange but wonderful books. This is my review of the book. It’s a story of two children years apart, who’s lives are entwined. It’s a coming of age story but full of darkness and light.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

Another of my favourite authors, Matt Haig. He focuses his stories around mental health and this book is no different. The protagonist finds herself in a position where she can delve into how her life could have been different had she taken different paths in life. Different stories. Different outcomes. Could things have been better. It’s certainly a book to make you think. You can read my review here. I have a signed copy of this book 🙂

The midnight library for an october read.

Cosy Crime

What better than to snuggle up with a book about murder! I have two favourite cosy crime authors, one is Richard Osman and his Thursday Murder Club series. I’ve read them all and they are fun and exciting in equal measures. I don’t think I enjoyed the first book as much as the others, but you have to get to know the characters and when you do it’s much easier to feel what they are going through. It’s a great series overall and although it’s not exactly October related it’s good for snuggling up with with a nice cup of cocoa when the nights the draw in.

Another cosy crime author I’ve recently discovered is the lovely Rob Rinder. I’ve read two of his books, The Trial and The Suspect. Again, not particularly October related but great for snuggling up with for a fun read with a little tension added in. You can read my reviews here.

  1. I always enjoy reading book reviews and I was relieved that you didn’t include any horror – not my genre! Matthew Haigh is one of my favourite authors and I’ve just finished the Thursday Murder Club series – I’ll miss those characters! #pocolo

    1. Yes, I was deliberately avoiding horror as I wanted to steer clear of the Halloween obvious. I do like some horror myself, but it’s usually psychological.
