The Blurb
Nina can never forgive Maggie for what she did. And she can never let her leave.
They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past.
Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can’t ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price.
But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn’t know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way―even if it kills her.
Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies.
My Review of What Lies Between Us
Each chapter alternates between Maggie’s story and Nina’s version of events. The story is gripping from the start and a real page turner. I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen next.
There is some time jumping, mostly from 20 or so years ago when Nina was a teen, to the present when she has her elderly mother locked up in the attic. But Maggie has only been in the attic just over 2 years (3 by the end of the book) and we go back to events leading up to her current situation.
From each of the characters story it’s hard to work out who is more evil. Is Maggie evil for what she did to Nina? I Nina evil for what she is doing to Maggie. What happened to Maggie’s husband, Nina’s dad? Each version of the story is different.
It’s such a strange relationship which started out like any normal family and ended up so cruel. All the time you are wanting to know why and how it’s all going to end.
Some say the ending was rushed, but I think in stories like this it adds to the tension, it builds up slowly up until the point when everything explodes and we get all the answers and a shocking conclusion.
It certainly keeps you gripped, but it’s very dark, often violent and including the impression of child sexual abuse. It’s definitely got the shock factor.
I’ll be digging out some more of John Marrs books. Have you read any? Would you recommend my next read?

If I can find this on the library app it’s going on my to listen to list. I want to know all the secrets and how it all plays out. x
I haven’t read any John Marrs, but this sounds right up my street! I will definitely be looking out for it. Thanks for the recommendation.
