My Review of His and Hers

I actually found this book quite a slow burner, unlike other books of Alice Feeney’s that have me gripped from the very first page. However, it didn’t lack in her usual twists and turn. When you think you know what’s going on, everything is turned on it’s head. And at the end you are still left wondering who is responsible for all these deaths, until the final twist.

Anna is a newsreader for the BBC and has been filling in for another reader while she’s been on maternity leave, for two years! Then she comes back and Anna is pushed out. (I have actually had this happen to me in a job and it’s awful.)

So, Anna goes back to her hometown of Blackwood where a body has been found. With good knowledge of the area Anna is first on the scene and even manages to get more information than she should from a rookie woman police officer. She also spots her ex husband, a detective working on the case.

The woman murdered happens to be an old friend of Anna but Anna isn’t too bothered because as we learn along the way, she wasn’t a very good friend.

We find out about Anna’s other friends in Blackwood were equally horrid as one by one they are all murdered. Anna’s husband is even suspected as he finds himself being framed for the murders, even though one of them is his sister.

The story is told in 3 parts, His, the ex husband, Her, Anna the reporter and the murderer who is not disclosed but it could be anyone.

The twists come as fast as the murders and the book gains pace with so much going on I couldn’t stop reading. The final twist was very clever.

I enjoyed this book despite it’s slow start and none of the characters actually being likeable. This is common in Alice Feeney’s books. This was her third novel and although a lot of her novels have the same formula, they are all different and very entertaining. Some have totally unbelievable ending twists, and this one kind of fits that, but it could also be true. Never underestimate what anyone can do.

Only read Alice Feeney if you like lots of twist and turns, like to be kept guessing/proven wrong, and are willing to accept the most surprising endings.
