A Place to Read

Talking At Night by Claire Daverley – a book review

I joined a book club to talk about books with other people and it’s been great fun so far. Last months book, The Trial by Rob Rinder, ended up not being a favourite. But I thought it was so good I read the second book in the series. This months book is Talking at Night by Claire Daverley. A Romance. I’m sure there will be mixed results about this one.

The Blurb

Will and Rosie meet as teenagers.

They’re opposites in every wayShe overthinks everything; he is her twin brother’s wild and unpredictable friend. But over secret walks home and late-night phone calls, they become closer – destined to be one another’s great love story.

Until, one day, tragedy strikes, and their future together is shattered.

But as the years roll on, Will and Rosie can’t help but find their way back to each other. Time and again, they come close to rekindling what might have been.

What do you do when the one person you should forget is the one you just can’t let go?

My Review of Talking At Night

Now, I’m not a romance reader which didn’t help. But, I’m not a total unromantic person, some of my most favourite films have been romance ones. (Last Christmas, Sleepless in Seattle, You Got Mail, My Fair Lady, Singing in the Rain and more.) I have read a few romantic novels too.

I actually enjoyed the series of One Day but couldn’t bring myself to read the book. This is supposed to give out the same vibes.

Okay, I’ll be honest. It lacked speech marks, I found that hard. It spent a lot of time with teenagers (which is okay, I like to read a lot of YA books and even though my teens are far behind me I really don’t mind reading about them.) But these teens were just, well, boring. There were issues raised but never actually investigated closely enough in my opinion. The story was drawn out into a lot of nothingness.

They do get older and things change, they move away but are always connected. There are some sad moments, and some joyful moments (although these are few) but it just goes on and on and on. I know with One Day, I could see that the main characters were not meant to be together when they were younger and both needed to find their own way in life. But the ending was amazing and heart wrenching.

The ending of this book was, well, I don’t want to give it away by saying the wrong thing but I didn’t feel the same.

A lot of the characters were just simply dull. In fact I’d go as far as to say the main characters were dull. Just when things started to get interesting, it fell flat. But that’s my opinion. It seems I am in the minority.

If you love a romance story with a ‘will they?’ ‘won’t they?’ vibe then this will be right up your street. For me it was a struggle but I finished it. (And it’s long!)

  1. As soon as I read the start of your review, I thought it sounded like One Day. I read the book years ago, but have never seen the TV series.
Like yourself, I’m not a fan of romantic fiction, but usually read about two or three a year. I don’t think I’ll bother with this one!
Good luck with the discussion at the book club.

  2. Interesting, I read One Day and watched the movie, I did not know there was a tv show! As much as I enjoyed the story, it also destroyed me both times so I don’t think I’d want to watch the show. Too bad this one didn’t deliver what you wanted 🙁
