After reading Never Lie by Frieda Mc Fadden for my book club, I decided I’d try The Boyfriend by the same author. My book club has given me 3 free months access to Bookbeat which is like Audible, but instead of getting a credit a month you get a certain amount of hours to listen. I was given a 30 hour subscription and I’ve only 8 hours left this month and it’s April 6th! Good job I have some paperbacks to get through too.

The Blurb
She’s looking for the perfect man. He’s looking for the perfect victim.
Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can’t shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot.
Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He’s charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet.
Then the brutal murder of a young woman―the latest in a string of deaths across the coast―confounds police. The primary suspect? A mystery man who dates his victims before he kills them.
Sydney should feel safe. After all, she is dating the guy of her dreams. But she can’t shake her own suspicions that the perfect man may not be as perfect as he seems. Because someone is watching her every move, and if she doesn’t get to the truth, she’ll be the killer’s next victim…
My Review of The Boyfriend
I can already see a theme with Frieda Mc Fadden. A slow start, a ditsy girl and a completely shocking and quick turn at the end with lots of twists.
Again, the main character, Sydney, was so typical got to have a boyfriend, need to find the right man, dating all the wrong men. It doesn’t help that her Mother keeps reminding her that time is running out for grandkids. I find it kind of annoying but I guess it’s the life of single young women, especially in New York.
I did actually look up to see if Freida Mc Fadden was actually a man pretending to be a woman because of her views, but she’s actually a practicing physician. So I guess writing is a side hobby. It feels like she wants to write cute romantic stories, but they have such dark twists. And they are an easy read and a bit addictive.
Back to the story, Sydney’s friend is murdered in a most horrific way. Immediately we are drawn to the janitor of the block of apartments where they live, but his girlfriend gives him an alibi for the evening of the murder.
The next subject is the guy who Sydney dates and becomes a bit of a stalker.
But then Sydney meets a new guy, Tom and he seems perfect. But he doesn’t want to meet her family or friends which feels a bit strange. Sydney remembers her murdered neighbour’s boyfriend wasn’t keen on meeting them either.
We also have Sydney’s ex on the scene who is a policeman that Sydney broke up with because he was more in love with the job than her.
So many suspects!
In between we have the stories in the past of two young lads and their unusual friendship. The murder of one of the boys father, and the possible murder of three girls. You think you are putting together the pieces but then it all falls apart and the twists leave you reeling.
I might go back to the beginning and read some of her earlier books. I do think that it might get easier to solve the crimes if she keeps the same sort of themes going through her books.
A quick page turning thriller with a bit of gore thrown in.
