A Place to Read

Never Lie by Freida Mc Fadden

This was my book club book for April book club which is not until the end of the month but I finished it quickly. Never Lie is the first book by Freida Mc Fadden I have read but I would definitely read more.

The Blurb

Newlyweds Tricia and Ethan are searching for the house of their dreams. They think they’ve found it when they visit the remote manor that once belonged to Dr. Adrienne Hale, a renowned psychiatrist who vanished without a trace years ago. But when a violent winter storm traps them at the estate, the house begins to lose its appeal.

Stuck inside and growing restless, Tricia stumbles on a collection of audio transcripts from Dr. Hale’s sessions with patients. As Tricia listens to the cassette tapes, she learns about the terrifying chain of events leading up to the doctor’s mysterious disappearance.

With each tape, another shocking piece of the puzzle falls into place, and a web of lies slowly unravels. But by the time Tricia reaches the final cassette, the one that reveals the entire horrifying story, it will be too late…

My review of Never Lie

Back into one of my favourite genres, a good murder mystery. I will admit though the first part of the book and the main character, Trisha, was driving me nuts. She was so stupid and naïve and her language was childish. Her actions were worse. But the story was creepy and kind of gripping.

Two newlyweds go to view a house, but the snow is bad and they end up getting trapped there and the estate agent never arrives. There is no phone connection, and it seems like there is someone creeping around the huge house.

The couple have not known each other long but she seems totally besotted with him despite all her friends pointing out the ‘red flags’ he gives off.

In between the story of the couple we have the story of the missing owner of the house who disappeared 3 years ago, presumed murdered by her boyfriend who is also missing.

We also have some recordings that the previous owner made because she was a psychiatrist. Trisha starts listening to some of these tapes. Seemingly at random.

After a couple of days things take a sinister turn and we find out what has happened to the previous owner and the history behind her patients.

The whole story is creepy and sinister and even though the clues are obvious at the end it makes you kick yourself for not picking them up sooner (there were a couple I thought of quite quickly but I am an avid murder mystery reader so I know what to look for.)

Overall, it’s a great mystery with lots of twists and it keeps you guessing. Despite the main character irritating me at first I really enjoyed this book as it went on and the ending was chilling.

I will check out more from Freida Mc Fadden.

  1. This sounds like one for me! I’ve seen lots of this author’s books around, but have never read any. I’m getting towards the end of my Val McDermid journey, so will be looking for another author to read soon.

  2. Haven’t heard of this one before but it sounds interesting! Maybe a bit too much in the thriller vein of mysteries for me though.
