The Impossible Fortune is the fifth in the Thursday Murder Club series by Richard Osman. I recently watched The Thursday Murder Club on Netflix and it made an impact on my visualisation of the characters. Not a bad one, but different to how I’d imagined them before. I was looking forward to the book but I waited until I could get it on my Audible and listen to Fiona Shaw read it for me. She sounds so much like Joyce.

Who’s got time to think about murder when there’s a wedding to plan?
It’s been a quiet year for the Thursday Murder Club. Joyce is busy with table plans and first dances. Elizabeth is grieving. Ron is dealing with family troubles, and Ibrahim is still providing therapy to his favourite criminal.
But when Elizabeth meets a wedding guest who fears for their life, the thrill of the chase is ignited once again. A villain wants access to an uncrackable code, and will stop at nothing to get it. Plunged back into their most explosive investigation yet, can the gang solve the puzzle and a murder in time?
My Review of The Impossible Fortune
I think the series just gets better and better and it would be sad if Richard Osman really does stop with this book, but saying that, it goes out with a bang!
I love that he brought back Joyce’s little notes, it helps to bring us all up to date without a ton of explanation. And I love Joyce!
Elizabeth is grieving her husband Stephen and nothing much has been happening in the past year. Well not for the Octogenarian’s at Coopers Chase, but Joyce’s daughter has met a man and they are getting married. The action begins when Elizabeth is approached by the best man, Nick, at the wedding saying her needs her help as he thinks someone is trying to kill him.
So the crime solving begins again. Everyone seems to have their own things going on at the same time. Joyce is enjoying a better relationship with her daughter, Joanna, Ibrahim is still meeting up with the, now released, criminal drug dealer Connie and Ron is worried about his son Jason and Daughter Suzie, and helping to take care of his grandson Kendrick. Kendrick plays a sweet part when he is trying to interpret what is going on by listening to the adults from another room.
There is a murder, of course, and right on the spill over car park of Cooper’s Chase! There is also someone who would do anything to get his hands on a secret code. There are conspiracies, lies, treachery and violence, and tea and cake. Everything you would expect from the Thursday Murder Club.
It was a real treat to catch up with the characters again.
