I have been curious about the Let Them theory for a while and decided to jump in and read this book. I actually got the audio book read by Mel Robbins herself.

My Review of The Let Them Theory
I remember reading the ‘Let Them Poem’ by Cassie Phillips on Facebook a long while ago and thought it was really relevant. I have discovered since reading this book that the American motivation speaker had taken this poem and used it for the basis of her own theory. She does admit to not writing the poem, but doesn’t mention Cassie Phillips as the author. This doesn’t feel right. If you are going to take someone’s work and use it as your own theory you at least need to mention the original author surely?
Anyway, back to the book. I found it really interesting in parts. Especially in the beginning. And I have to admit it has made me think differently.
You might think that just letting people do what they want is letting them take advantage of you, but it’s quite the opposite. You can’t control another person’s thoughts and feelings so why try, just let them be them and let you be you. It’s quite refreshing.
Mel Robbins gets quite personal in her experiences which makes this book hers. The theory itself might have come from a poem that someone else wrote but her theory is not quite the same. It’s just a basis.
The book’s concept is simple and if you don’t practice most of what Mel says already I’d be surprised. I did feel a little bit more inspired to practice a little more assertiveness and there were a couple of things which resonated with me personally.
I’ve actually been finding myself saying ‘let them’ to myself a lot more since reading the book. Mostly in my head.
I like the way that Mel Robbins gives a little re-cap of what you have learned from her at the end of each chapter. It helps to keep things crisp in your mind.
As for Mel Robbins making money from Cassie Phillips poem, I think it’s a tricky one. Yes, I believe that Mel should have credited Cassie for her inspiration, but the poem really is just the inspiration, the phrase coinage is an inspiration. The rest of the work that has gone into the book is Mel’s. I have since heard that Mel Robbins is trying to trademark the ‘Let Them Theory’
This is kind of sad because Cassie Phillips was about to publish her own book and now she has had to delay. Someone else using a similar name to Cassie has also published a book. Sad and messy.
No-one actually owns the idea but it feels like a person with more money and more social impact can control the words.
I think whole murkiness around the book takes a bit away from it.
But wherever you discover the theory of ‘let them’ it does make a lot of sense and can be very helpful.
If you want to read the poem, then please google Cassie Phillips Let Them Poem.
Mel Robbins has never taken credit for Cassie Phillips poem, but did she take her theory without crediting where she truly found it.
Have you read the poem or the book. I’d be interested to know your views?
Great book review.
This article is a great resource for anyone looking to dive deeper into this topic. I love how you’ve broken everything down into digestible sections, each packed with valuable insights. It’s clear that you’ve spent a lot of time researching this, and the effort really shines through in the quality of the content.
This sounds like an interesting book and helpful in certain situations, but the issue with the poem would certainly take the shine off it a bit.
Sounds interesting, but I agree with you, it would have been nice to mention the author of the poem. xx
